AIDS Healthcare Foundation began in 1987 as a hospice network in Los Angeles, caring for people at the end of their lives when HIV medicine could do little else. As treatment advanced, so did the mission. Today AHF describes itself as the largest HIV/AIDS healthcare, research, prevention, and education provider in the world, with millions of people in care across dozens of countries, under a simple promise: cutting-edge medicine and advocacy regardless of ability to pay.
Where donated goods fit
AHF’s largest retail fundraising vehicle is its Out of the Closet thrift chain, born in 1990 at a single Atwater Village storefront and now 25 stores in nine states. Donated clothing and furniture, collected through free home pickups and store drop-offs, becomes revenue that funds HIV testing, pharmacies, wellness centers, food security, and housing programs.
